Committees & Descriptions

Committee Chairs

Archives – Researches, collects, and organizes to preserve the history of the Church. Maine archives and museums membership.

Capital Campaign

Jody Rich & Rosemary Winslow

Caring Committee

Ray and Jay Rogers and Nancy Wynne

Evening Sandwich Program (ESP) – Meets approximately quarterly to review financial statements, discuss issues/concerns/needs, and be a communication forum for the ESP teams.

Maili Baily

Fellowship – Welcomes new people and guests, maintains Guest Book and yellow cards in the pews, sends letters to first-time visitors, coordinates Greeters, arranges new member meetings and provides information packets for them.

Kathy McKay

Finance – Reviews/amends/approves the annual budget and presents it to the Board for approval.  Reviews financial issues and makes recommendations to the Board.

Dave Wynne

Fund Raising – Plans for and assists with fund raisers, from smaller monthly events to capital campaigns such as rebuilding of the bell tower.  New in 2005.

Eileen Ringel

Grant Writing

Bill Basford, Jim Easton, Don Naber, Sylvia Spear,

Linda Woods

Hospitality – Coordinates coffee hour sign-up.  One person usually takes this on for a year or two and then "passes the coffeepot" to another member.

Claire Prontnicki

Investment Management – Keeps track of investments and endowment income, and makes recommendations to the Board.

Mark Jose

Ministry – Supports the minister and proposes the minister's compensation package for the year.

Sally Harwood, Linda Lee, Diane Wheeler

Music – Hires church organist, coordinates "Special Music" for Sunday and other services, maintains church organ and pianos, schedules special musical events such as the Keyboard Concert.

Harry Vayo

Nominating – Brainstorms and asks members of the congregation to serve on committees and the Board (Officers and Trustees.)

Don Naber

Officers and Trustees – President, Vice-president, Treasurer, Clerk, and six Trustees.  Officer terms are for one year and are renewable, except that the President is not to serve more than two consecutive years.  The trustees' 3-yr terms are staggered to allow two trustees to be elected annually.

Karen Kusiak, President

Planned Giving – Educates the congregation about bequests and charitable giving.  A resource for those who want to include the Church in their wills and estate plans.

Jon Rogers, Sue Cook

Pledge Drive, AKA "Bellringers" – Plans and implements the annual fundraising campaign to meet the operating budget and other financial needs.

Jody Rich and Nat Shed

Point – Gathers information, writes, edits and distributes the church's monthly newsletter, "The Point".

Connie Winship

Property & Grounds – Maintains the Church, rental property, and all grounds. Conducts an annual inspection and obtains estimates of proposed projects, such as expansion of parking and repair of the bell tower.

David Vaughn, Ed Spear

Religious Education – Provides classes and programs each Sunday for children, pre-school through high school.

Linda Lee, Lisa Covey

Safety – Ad hoc committee that convenes when there is a safety issue to be addressed.

Jon Rogers, Linda Lee 

SOFIA (Strategic Organizing and Planning for Faith in Action) – Turns the spiritual energy of the church into tangible benefit for the community.

Eric Sharpe

Welcoming Congregation – Works on issues of gay, lesbian, bisexual and trans-gendered people. Members have completed state-level "Training of Trainers" to allow them to assist other churches.

Ray & Connie Winship

Worship – Plans and orchestrates lay services (approx one per month), and special services such as Easter, Christmas, Flower Sunday, Fall Celebration Sunday. Takes care of "before" and "after" service needs such as water, hymn board, announcements, sound system, candles, and locking the doors.

Guidelines for Living

We, the congregation of the Universalist-Unitarian Church of Waterville, Maine, honoring our liberal religious heritage and acknowledging our presence in Waterville since 1826, affirm the value of:

        - Individuals and their unique journeys of personal and spiritual growth.
        - A community that welcomes children and adults to an extended family with    social as well as religious life,
         - Worship that brings together tradition and ritual with creative contributions from our diverse congregation,
        - Service beyond self as a means of expressing our religious convictions, and
        - Self-governance in our life together as a congregation in keeping with the tradition of our denomination.

Principles and Purposes

The following statements were adopted as Bylaws by the 1984, 1985, and 1995 General Assemblies.

We, the member congregations of the Unitarian Universalist Association, covenant to affirm and promote:

  • The inherent worth and dignity of every person
  • Justice, equity, and compassion in human relations
  • Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in our congregations
  • A free and responsible search for truth and meaning
  • The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large
  • The goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all
  • Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part.
