Peter Burgher was born and raised in Rochester, New York. His mother died of polio in 1950 when he was three years old. Grandparents, aunts and uncles stepped forward to maintain family stability. He learned to play tennis at nine and it has provided a lifelong source of enjoyment and new friendships. Peter attended Lehigh University where he majored in Philosophy. He attended the University of Windsor in Ontario, earning a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology in 1982. He completed an intensive course in Gestalt Therapy Methods at the Gestalt Institute of Cleveland in 1979. In 1982 Peter moved to Maine where he was employed as a staff psychologist at Kennebec Valley Mental Health Center. In 1985 he began a full time private practice of psychology which he continues today. His practice involves work with abuse victims, sex offenders, adult and adolescent clients with psychological disorders using individual, group, marital and family treatment modalities. Peter met Lisa Covey in 1995 when they found themselves sharing a bunkhouse at Baxter State Park during Peter’s Men’s Group weekend. They climbed Mount Katadin the next day, Lisa summiting first. They were married by Rev. Sevren Towl in 1996 and Lisa gave birth to Justin in 1997. Justin continues to be the great joy in their life. In 2009 Peter and Lisa separated and they currently share Justin’s time. They have achieved an amiable balance in sharing their parental responsibilities and remain very good friends. Peter began attending The Waterville Universalist Unitarian Church in 1997 and has steadily come to embrace the principles of this church, particularly its embrace of all religious traditions and its attempt to be inclusive and affirming of the many paths to spiritual wellness. He is particularly committed to creating a safer, more understanding world for gay, lesbian, transgender, and bisexual individuals. He spends his free time bicycling, reading, playing tennis, and attending Justin’s many athletic events. |
