Welcoming Congregation

The Welcoming Congregation Program promotes acceptance, inclusion, understanding and equity of persons of diverse sexual orientation and gender identity. We work on GLBT (Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual/Transgender) issues and activities within the church and with other community and state organizations.

Members of the Welcoming Congregation wear the distinctive square rainbow pin shown on the left on their name tags so that visitors and others will know who we are. Straight and gay, we are “out”.

We post a variety of GLBT-themed posters and bulletin board information in the public areas and make available GLBT pamphlets including our own Welcoming Congregation tri-fold. We advertise GLBT celebrations such as Coming Out Day and Gay History Month, write articles in the church newsletter, and “meet/greet/cater” at occasional  Sunday services.

Twice yearly we facilitate Lay Services, including occasional Second Hours; we teach Religious Education classes. More recently, we have sponsored open-to-the-public film-discussion events.

As the occasion presents itself we network with other church organizations such as Interfaith Alliance, working as needed in GOTV (“get out the vote”) activities on state referendums and political campaigns. Working with EQME, we have organized letter-to-the-editor and other media events, helped organize canvassing of central Maine neighborhoods and volunteered at phone banking cites at Colby College and in our church basement.
